Beagle or English Beagle is a breed of small to medium sized dogs and member of hound dogs. It is similar to foxhound but slightly smaller with shorter legs and longer ears. They are basically scent hounds that were bred for hunting hares, rabbits and other smaller games. With its acute sense of smell and tracking capabilities, Beagles are often used as detection dogs for detecting prohibited agricultural imports and foodstuff. Beagles have also appeared in comic books, culture and literature including television shows, Snoopy of the Comic Strip 'Peanuts' being the most famous Beagle of the World.






Beagle is a sturdy and hard small dog with squarely built body, slightly domed and longer skull, square muzzle and large eyes in brown or hazel color. Ears are low set, wide, and long. Nose is black and broad with full nostrils. The tail of Beagle is set moderately high but never curled. The coat is medium length, smooth and hard and comes in a wide range of colors including the most common tri-colored Beagles with large black spots and brown shading on the white body. Average weight of a Beagle is about 10 kg and the height is around 15 inches. Apart from being excellent scent hounds, Beagles are also loving, gentle, intelligent, sweet tempered and sociable and thereby making them suitable as pets and companion dogs.

Beagle is completely a family dog with playful, friendly and joyful nature. The pet acts as family member with children and other dogs also. He loves company and togetherness very much. But with strangers he would warm up quickly at first sight to them. This nature makes him a good watchdog. This pet has a tendency to bark and howl when lonely at home. As this pet dog loves to roam and to sniff, he should be kept on a leash to avoid his sniffing and running off nature to hunt after interesting smells.

Like other pet dogs, he doesn’t have doggy odors. He has the ability to live in a city, apartment without yard or open space. But he is a medium flaking dog, so he would leave quite a bit of hairs around your house or apartment. This good-looking Beagle is 12 to 15 inches tall with weight of around 16 to 36 pounds. He has a nice short coarse coat. The Beagle’s coat generally consists of two or three colors.

The dead hair falls out naturally. It requires occasional brushing due to its short and easy care coats. Although the exact origin of this pet is still unknown but this type dogs were traced during Roman time. The modern beagle was urbanized in England in the 1830's out of several other hound breeds. During 1840, the beagle arrived in America for the first time. In AKC popularity parameter this dog (Beagle) was 5th out of 157 breeds in 2007.
